School Supply Drive and ACT Workshops

The Madison County (MS) Alumnae Chapter organizes a school supply drive for a local elementary school each year. The school supplies are presented in the middle of the year to help replenish the supplies that are beginning to diminish from the start of the school term. Chapter members solicit donations and personally provide school supply items. The items are presented to elementary schools where they are distributed among classrooms as needed.

The chapter also hosts free ACT workshops for high school students preparing for college entrance. The ACT workshop participants receive information on test-taking strategies, guided practice on sections of the ACT, tips on preparing for the test, and information on what to expect the day of the test.

A Morning with Minerva

A Morning with Minerva is a celebration honoring some of Madison County’s most dynamic and amazing mothers. Ladies are nominated by family and friends, and then qualified candidates are selected for recognition and receipt of the Minerva Diamond Award. Nine finalists, chosen for outstanding contributions in the areas of family, community and volunteerism, church, and/or career, are honored during a breakfast celebration in song, dance and/or through spoken work. One of the outstanding ladies is named Delta’s Mother of the Year. The fundraising event is a collaborative effort between the chapter’s Special Projects and Arts and Letters Committees. Proceeds from this event are used to underwrite community service activities, and more specifically, to fund our scholarship program. The academic stipends, which are presented during the chapter’s May Week activities, are provided to 10 deserving high school seniors upon the chapter’s receipt of enrollment at the students’ chosen schools. We present opportunities for scholarships to students from Canton High School, Velma Jackson High School, Madison Central High School, Ridgeland High School, and most recently, to the new Germantown High School. The 2012 A Morning with Minerva will be May 19, 2012 at Plantation Commons in Madison, MS.
